Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The Academy lasted for two weeks and was conducted online. The first week consisted of 'the business of law', including a client interview and presentations from various individuals to teach us skills needed to be successful in commercial law generally. The second week was focused on CMS as a law firm and included full-group interviews with associates and partners in many of the different sectors at the firm, including litigation and arbitration, and finance
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
I found this to be exciting and insightful. During my time on the scheme, we heard from associates and partners from many different sectors. This was very important to me as I learned that CMS cater to a number of different areas of law I am interested in, and will encourage me to find a sector that best suits my interests and also my skills.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
I learned many new skills during my time on the vacation scheme, including two vital skills i am utilising on a day-to-day basis. Firstly, we were given a presentation about the importance of 'branding' ourselves within law firms, and how to efficiently expand our networks. Moreover, we were given a presentation about the importance of written communication within commercial law, and how to effectively communicate with clients and colleagues with brevity and politeness.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The firm culture is accepting but also forward-thinking. We had numerous talks about the importance of inclusion and diversity at the firm, learning that CMS does not tolerate discrimination and will make an effort for all employees to feel comfortable. Further, the firm encourages creativity and is a learning environment – the firm is understanding that trainees need time to find their feet and support is available at all times.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I really enjoyed my insight into the culture of CMS. A fundamental factor for many graduates is firm culture, so it was important for me to learn that CMS is a firm that will foster and encourage the talents and skills of its employees, whilst also being ambitious and forward-thinking. The two weeks provided me with enough insight to make the decision with confidence to accept a training contract with the firm.

Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to CMS
Most importantly, CMS is not looking for one specific kind of individual. Through my time on the scheme, I learned that CMS are looking for applicants to display their own character, brand and skill set rather than force themselves to be what is traditionally viewed as the 'perfect' trainee. I think it is important for applicants to really think about what their skills and interests are, and how they can best showcase these to CMS.
