Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Supporting the pub manager in the day to day running of the pub.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Having the opportunity to learn something different which has a positive effect on my work. Being able to talk to the team about this and encourage others to take part in an apprenticeship with JDW and the positive effects it has for them and JDW.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Improved knowledge of company finances, improved knowledge of business risk analysis, noticing the difference between “managers” and “leaders” and the implications/benefits of these.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
Great.
The only issue being that the most important project started November 2022, just before the busiest time of the year in hospitality, meaning a lot of catching up in January. This was the only issue throughout.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
As much as needed. Though there’s not a lot of people on my area who have completed the course recently. Working with the people on my course has been more beneficial.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
A fair amount.
One of the course leaders left Leeds Beckett mid term, and one was difficult to get in touch with but there were others who were great.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
More confident in certain aspects. Knowing there was some modules I enjoyed more has given me an indication into where I’d like my career to develop.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
We often have charity driven activities and teams for Clic Sargent. There are also alot of different networking zoom meetings.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend JD Wetherspoon to a friend?
Yes
Why?
JDW is a company that look after their staff (despite what rumours circulated during covid). They adhere to their “employee promise”, provide great bonuses and incentives. The apprenticeship has been great for me, having worked for JDW for 9 years I’ve enjoyed getting back into learning and developing myself.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JD Wetherspoon?
Have a positive mindset and work ethic. Hospitality is hard work but also rewarding. JDW appreciate the work you do, with regular bonuses, discounts and free food on shift.
It’s great that the apprenticeship scheme runs for all abilities, and different sections of the business.
