My role is a shift leader in a pub. I take control of cash management, stock management, staff management and customer management.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I thoroughly enjoyed my apprenticeship. Lifetime were a wonderful group that helped me with achieve my goals. They were supportive and helpful. I have learned a lot. The online aspect of learning was very informative and easy to access and understand.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I learned about different leadership styles and motivation tactics as well as finance and management. All of which have improved my skills as a manager.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Fairy organised. Could have been better structured. But I liked the fact that you could choose which modules to complete first.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Not as much support as I would have liked or expected. Lifetime tried to encourage my employer but this was not reciprocated very well.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I received a lot of support from Lifetime. They had options for mental health and stress. They help with learning difficulties. Very good training provider.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification has drastically improved my skill set in my role. I have learned more in my 12 month apprenticeship than other experienced managers have ever learned within three years in their role. It very much worth the time and effort.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We have companywide charity events for CLIC Sergeant throughout the year such as hiking, darts competition, football (kick for CLIC), marathon (through treadmills) and others that each pub can do through their own discretion. We have network groups for different diverse groups such as LGBTQIA+, women, race and ethnic diversity, and disability, mental health and wellbeing.

Why?
It is a very supportive company with many great employee benefits such as monthly bonuses, quarterly bonuses and yearly bonuses. It has an apprenticeship scheme which I went through that goes from GCSE-equivalent up to Bachelor and Masters degrees. It has ample opportunities for promotions and easy paths to progression that are encouraged by senior employees. It has network groups to support minorities. It has weekly updates that keep all employees informed. It is genuinely the best company I’ve ever worked for.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to JD Wetherspoon?
Be honest about struggles you may have, they will support you to the best of their abilities with no judgement. They do not discriminate or exclude, and if anyone ever does they have zero tolerance for it.
