Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My day to day role involves using programming languages such as Python and R to carry out data analysis and data science tasks. My role is to automate processes, process data and visualise outputs. I have worked on geospatial projects, machine learning projects and software development projects. Every day is different.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I love my apprenticeship programme. My favourite part of my apprenticeship is the work I do at Arup. I enjoy the training I do at university, but work is much more engaging and interesting. I love the variety in the workplace and range of different project I have the opportunity to work on.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
As part of my role, I have learnt: Python, R, some C#, Geospatial Information Systems, machine learning, cloud, web development, JavaScript and many more project specific technical skills. I have also developed soft skills such as communication and presenting throughout my apprenticeship. Every project is a great chance to learn.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My apprenticeship programme is well structured as it follows the typical university time table. I attend one day per week in term time and study two modules at a time. The course is well organised and the timetable is communicated well to myself and my employer. The only downside is the large gap in training over the summer. However, this is a great opportunity to get stuck in at work and do other training.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Arup is a fantastic apprenticeship employer. I am well supported by my line manager, technical mentor and the wider team. I am trusted to make my own decisions, but have plenty of people to go to when I need support with my studies or with balancing work. I am able to take study leave days around exams.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The university provides great support. I have a skills coach who I can talk to about any university related issues and am able to message my lecturers on Teams or by email if I have any questions about lectures or the assignments. If I have questions, I know who to go to to get answer and the university are always happy to help.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
My qualification somewhat helps me in my role. However, I have studied similar content in a previous apprenticeship and have had to learn much of the content through work as I have needed it for projects. While what I'm studying is valuable, it could be much more detailed. I am looking forward to doing more of the specialism units as these will be much more relevant to my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
I am a STEM Ambassador and do talk and career events for high school students talking about apprenticeships and careers in STEM. I find this work interesting and valuable. There are plenty of social activities at work - from arranged events to impromptu socials. Being in the office is a great chance to network and socialise.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Arup is a fantastic organisation - especially for apprentices. In my experience, the people are incredibly friendly and are always willing to answer questions. Arup is an amazing environment to learn in as every project is different. You are given the opportunity to shape your own career and decide what you want to work on.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
I would recommend that you research the company and the role you are applying for. You should be passionate about what you want to do and show willingness to learn. You could talk about your favourite project Arup has done or discuss a skill you would like to learn or improve on.
