Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As a Business Manager for McDonald's I am responsible for the day-to-day operations of the restaurant. I am also responsible for my 167 members of staff, this includes their hiring and training but also all general HR tasks. I manage the key accounts in the restaurant and I am responsible for the profit that the restaurants makes on a monthly basis.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

This degree apprenticeship is not my first time at university, I did an undergraduate degree straight out of school while working part-time at McDonald's and it was not something I enjoyed. However, I can honestly say that I have loved being part of this apprenticeship, I have been supported the whole way, have progressed in my career and made friends on the course.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I feel that McDonald's does a good job at each level of the career ladder in providing their employees with new skills. At my current level of Business Manager, I think that have been a lot of opportunities for me to develop my skills. McDonald's partnership with MMU is excellent and there has been considerable training opportunities from both McDonald's and the university.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

McDonald's has worked very closely with MMU to ensure that the course maps very closely with its own curriculum. I started the course at the height of Covid, and MMU made sure that everything they were doing was in line with McDonald's own restrictions which were often more thorough than those imposed by the government. MMU has been very flexible in understanding that the job role demands a lot of my time and that things sometimes have to change at short notice.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I would say that the support from my employer has been excellent. Any time that I have needed to complete academic work has been given to me and my line managers have actively looked for way to help support my learning. Any issues that I have faced have I have been able to get assistance easily.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Again I would rate MMU as excellent, each apprentice has a Skills Coach who is there to support you throughout the apprenticeship and I have found that any issue I had had the skills coach has been able to assist me. Likewise the academic staff for each unit have gone out of their way to ensure that I am confident with the what has been covered on the sessions.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Since starting the apprenticeship I have progressed from a newly promoted Business Manager to a senior Business Manager within my organisation. Everything that is covered on the course is applicable to my job role and that means that everything that has been covered has been useful in developing my knowledge.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are always networking events within my organisation, as it stands my franchisee has 14 restaurants across the Liverpool City Region and and West Lancashire. This means that it can be difficult for managers from different restaurants to develop relationships but my organisation makes sure that we are participating in social events.

Would you recommend McDonald's to a friend?

Why?
I started McDonald's when I was 18 and I feel that I have grown up while working there. I have met all of my friends while working there and even though many of them are no longer employed by the company we are all still very close. I feel that McDonald's provides people with the skills and opportunities to progress in life and I feel that I owe everything I have to McDonald's.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to McDonald's?
I think that the thing that McDonald's values most is a goof work ethic. In my 13 years of experience, you will absolutely get out of McDonald's what you are willing to put in. Providing you are willing to work hard and give 100% you will go far with the company.
