Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As an non-destructive testing (NDT) technician I use a variety of techniques to inspect materials, components, structures, and systems to look for structural flaws. These flaws include corrosion, cracks, and other flaws that may compromise the NDT equipment. I also attend training courses to give a comprehensive understanding of the processes where tests are conducted on a component without destroying the item or its structure.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my apprenticeship program with rolls royce as I get to work within all different supply chain units of the business and get to have quite a lot of responsibility. This may come in the form of an office placement or working in a shop floor environment - overall I enjoy it.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learned many new skills during my apprenticeship such as ultrasonic inspection, radiographic inspection, eddy current inspection, dye penetrant & magnetic particle testing to many different materials. I also have done courses such as working in confined space and working at height within the workplace to develop my safety and understanding.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
My apprenticeship is quite well structured overall. However, there could be room for improvement within my business to make things more efficient. As the company is so large, communications can sometimes be poor between departments. I believe that apprentices should be managed solely by their line managers in their placements to improve comms as you see this person every day.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive lots of support from my employer - they pay for my degree, all of my training courses and give me a wage. Not only this but the people who I work with are really supportive toward my development. I am constantly learning new material on the job and during training courses
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
1/5
I receive support from my training provider every 8-10 weeks in the form of a meeting review - which is basically pointless. I think that a lot of apprentices at a lot of companies believe it's pointless too. I don't really have many other comms with my training provider other than this.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification becomes really valuable for when applying for future roles within the company and when trying to climb the company ladder in the future post completion of my apprenticeship. The same can be said for applications at external companies all over the world within non destructive testing (NDT & CM)
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
I competed for the rolls royce rugby fc club for the past few months. I have been training multiple times per week and have been playing as a flanker. This is a great networking and teambuilding activity to create more contacts within the business for potentially gaining future roles at RR
