Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role involves working on the openreach network. I work Underground and overhead installing cables ready for the jointers to come along afterwards to connect up.I work rurally and in urban environments and everyday is a different challenge.I am part of the chief engineers in north wales and I enjoy every minute of it.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoyed the programme, it was very fast paced and there were lots of new things to get your head around.The support from the learning and development team was very good and they were there to help you along the journey. After I finished the initial training I was out working on the network with my buddy’s which furthered my knowledge and experience

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I previously worked as an electrician so had some experience with cables etc before starting at openreach, after a 9 week in-house training with the company I learnt lots of new skills and how the network worked. I also did courses on how to operate various machinery and a roadworks signage and lighting course.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme was very intense and packed.There weee many courses to attend in the initial training and this went on for around 9 weeks. The tutors were very informative and were always on hand to provide any support if needed.I really enjoyed the practical aspects of the courses.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have as much or as little support as I need from my employer/manager.The support from the learning and development team in the initial training was there if it was needed and there was always somebody you could speak to if you wanted help or had any questions.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I had to complete an NVQ while on my learning journey. I was allocated an NVQ assessor who helped and guided me through completing the 13 units required with the NVQ portfolio. I was also required to complete my key skills in maths English and computer technology. My assessor was very helpful
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

From completing the qualification the knowledge I have learnt from doing my NVQ and working out in the field has helped me a lot with my role. There is a lot to learn with regards to health and safety and working in a safe manner.The courses I completed definitely helped with that
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I am not aware of any social activities, sports teams or professional networking events for me to get involved in. I tend to go running and I also go to the gym so that keeps me busy after I have been to work. I am sure though that there are such things If one looked into it

Why?
BT is a great place to work.They employ people from all different backgrounds and I have been lucky to work with some really amazing and talented people.From this I take what I learn from each person and apply it to my own way of working.I feel like I am part of a big team.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
Research Into the company and the role that you are applying for.There are lots of material on the internet and on YouTube that can help you with this. BT are very keen on good customer service so it’s a good idea to reference times when you have provided good service and gone above and beyond
