Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am a lab-based apprentice working on improving the synthetic routes to our Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API). I am based in an automation and robotics role and use technology to improve the efficiency of the processes in the lab. Automation is a growing field and I am involved in implementing technology in multiple ways throughout the lab.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I really enjoy working on real life projects and having an impact in the department. We are given a lot of responsibility as apprentices and it is very rewarding to see the impact of your work. I really enjoy working with other scientists and I learn so much from them.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have learned many skills, from the technical side of learning the science behind my role and the techniques in the lab to learning lots of other useful skills such as organisation and time management skills. As apprentices, we are given a lot of responsibility which allows you to think independently and problem solve.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
My programme is 4 years and I work four days and study one day a week. I am responsible for my planning my work and managing my time. My university course is released in blocks on a weekly basis and I am on a distance learning course so I study at home - watching lectures and completing assignments.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
The support is good from work. We have access to a Mental Health App where we can access both internal and external support. Connecting and meeting with other apprentices is also really important and is a great way to keep a close network. I also have my mentor and line manager for help with my job or any other questions.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I feel slightly less inclined to access the support from my training provider because we are a distance learning course but it is always made very clear that we can access the support and what is available to us. They are very encouraging of us setting up Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) as needed so they know how to help us.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My degree definitely helps support my work. Particular units are definitely more relevant than others but learning the knowledge at university helps give a really good grounding for the work I do. Both the university content and the knowledge I gain at work tends to complement really well and both my employer and training provider are happy to answer any questions.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There is so much to get involved in at work. There are lots of groups to join such as AZ Pride or Network of Women. There are also walking groups, board game club, the on-site gym and gym classes, cake rota etc. There are many opportunities to network at lots of events throughout the year, whether that's with other apprentices or other professionals.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend AstraZeneca to a friend?
Yes
Why?
AstraZeneca's fundamental values make it a really nice place to work. Everyone has great work ethic but also support a healthy work/life balance. All the managers are very supportive and help you drive your development in the direction you want to. There is lots of opportunity for growth in many aspects of the company.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
When applying to AstraZeneca, you have to be passionate about what you do and be able to demonstrate a wide variety of values with examples. I would recommend reading up on what the company does and where it operates to also have some background information on the company. Also don't be afraid to ask questions at interview.
