Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am a trainee project manager at Turner & Townsend. I am currently in a project support role and complete project work 80% of the time, with 20% of my time released from work to complete studies online through the London Metropolitan College.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I feel that it has been impacted by a change in personnel and remote working, but in general I have had a very good experience.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Turner & Townsend has a built-in competencies process which pushes apprentices to learn new skills and be involved in new tasks. Over the course of 5 years, you should have the ability to independently complete most day-to-day aspects of the project management role.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
The programme has a clear structure, with guidance shared with both management and apprentices which is shared on the first day.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
Each apprentice is put into contact with their line manager and apprentice development manager from the outset. The Early Careers team oversee the apprentices' progress and can provide support if not provided by the LM or ADM.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
Employer and training provider have informational sessions to explain the training course, and partial qualifications are facilitated by the employer. APM PMQ qualifications are an established process and apprentices can request to attend additional training courses as required.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
London Metropolitan College provide the academic basis of project management principles, which do feed in to your role. The course encourages students to make links between their current work and the source material. However, learning is stilted due to online learning.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Yes - newsletters sent out which encourage employees to join groups.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Turner & Townsend to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Overall a well-established training course with an industry-leading organisation. Support is provided and hands-on project experience is gained from day 1.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Turner & Townsend?
To seek support where required - whether this be from colleagues, line manager, HR, etc.
To actively separate work and study days to ensure that project teams are aware that you do not work on these days.
