Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As an Industrial Placement student I had my own bespoke project for which I spent time in the laboratory and in the office as was necessary. If desired, I could work from home when I was processing data from experiments.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
As I was doing my own project, it was all my responsibility. If I did not do something it would not get done and everything that was worked on appeared in the final thesis.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Learned a lot of useful laboratory techniques and generally improved my scientific skillset. Additionally, greatly improved presentation skills and gained experience with scientific writing. Frequent meeting with colleagues helped develop teamwork and communication skills.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
There was always support available when I needed it. Usually guidance came from my supervisor but even reaching out to other people for help was never an issue as everyone is more than happy to help out.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Due to the pandemic the office and lab capacity was greatly reduced so day-to-day work can go by without exchanging words with people. However, multiple online events existed to keep in touch with departments and the company as a whole.

Overall Experience
To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
My placement year was great overall. Although the pandemic did hamper it a little, all in all it was a great experience. Gained loads of invaluable experience working in the lab and in the industry and met a lot of great people.

Do not be put off by the fact that it is a massive company and you think you have no chance for getting a position. The selection process covers many aspects and there is always a chance to succeed.
