Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role at ARUP was to work alongside mechanical engineers on projects and complete tasks that I had been set with on a daily basis. I would complete the likes of pipework routed, ventilation calcs and schematics
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
During my placement I was given quite a lot of responsibility to a certain extent, I was required to draw different things for live projects in revit, carry out and complete calculations for various tasks. For some projects I was given tight deadlines to complete the work which was very beneficial in improving my time management.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
From my time at ARUP, I have developed a greater understanding of mechanical engineering in buildings. I learned how to use revit competently, developed my communication and listening skills and also enhanced my knowledge on the processes used within the industry for calculating flow rates and pipework sizes. From working at ARUP, I have also gained more confidence from when I started which is due to the friendly staff who all helped to make the placement as enjoyable as possible.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
Over the course of my 8 month placement, I received all the necessary support required whether it be technical or just advice/guidance on work. Everyone was extremely helpful and ensured that I always had someone to go to if I was struggling with a piece of work.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
Due to COVID, for most of the year I was working from home however, I would say that the culture and atmosphere in ARUP was amazing. We had various online social events to get people involved outside of a working environment and as mentioned previously it was always a friendly atmosphere but hard working at the same time.

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
As a whole, the placement experience was amazing, and one that I would recommend to anyone looking to gain experience in the construction industry, it was enjoyable and insightful.

For others applying for ARUP, I would say to go for it because it is an amazing company and for being one of the best firms in the world in engineering, you really will get an invaluable experience.
