Overview of Experience
Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
During my Legal Work Placement, I completed a number of tasks akin to the work of a Trainee Solicitor at Irwin Mitchell, and was fully supported with this throughout, as well as having been provided with excellent resources to use. I also had the opportunity to attend sessions with other departments, where I learned about those areas of business - in addition to learning of the support provided by Irwin Mitchell.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
Irwin Mitchell took the time during the Legal Work Placement to explain recent changes that altered the structure of the business, what specifically had influenced this change, and what this meant for Trainee Solicitors. In terms of roles available, Irwin Mitchell organised for us to have sessions with those who had entered the firm via Paralegal roles and therefore made it clear that internal routes were welcomed.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
Both my professional skills and personal attributes developed during the course of my Legal Work Placement. Despite being virtual, I was able to network, socialise with my colleagues and experience the flexible working scheme to its full potential. I have learnt in depth about the scale of work as a Trainee Solicitor and the firm's expectations of me as a candidate.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
As a firm, Irwin Mitchell were everything I had wanted them to be, and more. Irwin Mitchell were welcoming, friendly and incredibly approachable. As a firm, Irwin Mitchell encourage their employees to immerse themselves in the huge variety of volunteering schemes, diversity groups and social activities that they offer, or at least support. A charity helped my family some years ago, so this is really important to me.

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
My Legal Work Placement at Irwin Mitchell felt like I was just beginning my dream job! As a firm, Irwin Mitchell got everything right - I felt supported, encouraged, and I knew exactly what was expected of me. All of the timetabled sessions were really interesting and provided me with the knowledge of the firm and the industry that I sought after.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Irwin Mitchell
I would advise any candidate looking at applying to Irwin Mitchell to be themselves. Irwin Mitchell want to recruit genuine individuals, and that is why their ethos of 'expert hand, human touch' is so important to them. Everything that Irwin Mitchell do centres around their clients, so it is worth making sure that you can give examples of providing good client satisfaction in the interview stages, and reflect on why this is so important.
