Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
I worked in the Business Oversight Compliance team and I mainly dealt with anti-money launderign. My team and I analyzed issues that arised internally with the aim to define whether they were to be considered as policy breaches and to take all of the necessary steps to solve them. This involves writing reports and constantly update all of the people involved by the issue.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Barclays counts more than 80,000 employees, so I think it is necessary to put things into perspective. Differently from a small company or a startup, where the output of your work might be key to important decision-making since from day 1, at Barclays they ease you into it. I was given responsibilities regarding the internal functioning of the team operations, i.e., arrange meetings or give small update presentations.

In terms of soft skills, I got more and more comfortable in actively participating in meetings and I surely honed my teamworking. Moreover, I significantly improved my PowerPoint and Outlook skills. As regards hard skills, I had the chance to learn in an unbelievably quick and effective way all of the information necessary to work in an Anti-Money Laundering.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Barclays to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Barclays
I would recommend that they make sure they are applying for a position they are truly interested in and at least minimally knowledgeable about. I reckon that the business-specific part of the final interview might turn out to be quite tough if you have little to no idea about what the position you applied for actually is.
