Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

When starting the apprenticeship i studied at college 5 days a week for a full year (fuel money all covered as well as food) I started on site in July after the academic year and i switch through 15 different rotations in my time. Everyday is different and if you are looking for a job with a massive scope to try everything this would be a very good opportunity. Currently i am in design, i spend my days testing new concept designs and worked with highly skilled employers building my knowledge. I get a mix of hands on work and office based jobs on a daily basis. This keeps me engaged and always learning new skills.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I think the program has benefited me in many ways. I have gained confidence in working as a team as well as developing my people skills. i enjoy every single day i am working. No day is ever the same and i always am getting new challenges. I could not recommend this program more.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

YES! This job has taught me so many new skills as well as developing ones i previously acquired. For example, coming out of school i learnt basic solid works. Once i started on site i developed my skills to a point where i am now comfortable making highly skilled designs and drawings. In the workshop i have developed massively, learning new skills and techniques as well as trying out some new tools. All of the teams on site are friendly and willing to help which makes for a comfortable working environment. Doing so many different rotations teaches you new skills in every area of engineering.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

When on site the structure is fantastic. We receive regular updates on changes that are been made. For example some of my rotations have changes due to time constraints and i was made aware of the changes years in advance. Every different team is organized and has people already there to help at all times. I am always told to let team leader/managers know i am coming and they will sort out who i work with before i arrive.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

On a day to day basis i am contacted by different people to ensure i am doing okay on the site. I have regular monthly review to ensure i am still happy and enjoying all of the work i am doing. I have a apprentice review with a leader or manager on site every three months and each three months i get someone different and they will tell me there experiences and give me advice on upcoming rolls i will be doing.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I feel like the training provider could always do more to help. I think the college was lacking structure on the first year we went. This was probably down to Covid however i do feel like more support could have been given. I think that recently the support has been a lot better since getting new accessors and lectures involved.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I think the qualifications have helped me in general understanding engineering as a whole. I think that doing a unit in health and safety really helped me understanding some of the rules on site. I do wish at college we could do more work with engines to get better understanding.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I do play football with some of the lads from work. It is in an in work thing just normally go and play after we all finish on a Monday. Other than that we do not really do many social events however we do go off site and do EEC work. Which is out of office work doing different things, lots of good opportunity's there. Probably could be more to do with people from work and im sure now covid has gone there will be.

Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Simply because the company can provide someone with a bit of everything. Each day is something new and i do really think that you have such a large scope to try and find the job you really want within the company. I really do feel like Cummins has something for everyone, there are even good opportunities to travel with work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
Through the interview process just be yourself. Just go above and beyond with everything that you try and do, work as a team on the team building days. A massive thing to remember is no one is not good enough for the job. Everyone is equal so do not be scared to apply!
