Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
Responsible for successfully introducing new engine component, system or sub-system designs. As part of the team’s accountability we must complete standard validation tasks following the Design Verification Plan & Report process. The business department involves conducting work across four phases of the design lifecycle, in order to ensure robust and efficient solution are generated.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
The apprenticeship programme has been pleasurable throughout. I have been granted phenomenal networking opportunities and have worked alongside great colleagues, who have been able to transfer their knowledge and capabilities to myself. The scheme offers a versatile experience, where exposure is gained to various engineering functions across the business, which has made the process thoroughly enjoyable.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Become more proficient in the use and application of Creo Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. Alongside this, I have become more competent in employing the businesses product lifecycle management tools such as Windchill and Integrity. I have further developed my presentation and technical information delivery skills, in executing cross functional design reviews, in order to progress new components into production.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The apprenticeship programme is exceptionally well arranged. The leadership team have developed a pre-empted departmental rotation plan training matrix, which outlines the business segments that each successful candidate will experience. The documents enlists key skills and competency criteria that you must aim to comprehend and build upon during your time in each department.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
Cummins have demonstrated their core values of integrity, caring and inclusion throughout the apprenticeship scheme. The programme structure involves "Bi-Monthly" Apprentice Appraisal Reviews, with the Technical and Manufacturing organisations leadership team. In these discussions the key focus is to address concerns and offer support or guidance as required. The business instills an open door policy, which has been invaluable to my personal development.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Although the unprecedented challenges that COVID-19 has presented, Derwentside College continued to deliver virtual online lectures for the HNC. They have also offered additional support workshops to those who require further assistance. Likewise, from an NVQ and End-Point Assessment perspective, we received satisfactory guidance in order to complete these two aspects.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The HNC provides the fundamental mathematical, mechanical and electrical capabilities required for an engineering role. Understanding such principles can facilitate aspects of the job, when needing to calculate certain characteristics. Having the theoretical comprehension of such subjects, is a great resource when applying this in the day to day role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Cummins offer an "Every Employee Every Community (EEEC)" initiative, which enables employees to become involved with local projects and community partner events. The business also offers leisure facilities onsite, such as a gymnasium, which employees can utilise in their free time. Cummins also encourage its employees to participate in STEM educational events. They provide a culture of networking and one that is community focused.
