Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am currently on a machinist pathway, where my daily activities include setting, programming and machining components using CNC machines (lathes, milling and grinding machines). It includes well structured learning, a friendly working environment and helpful colleagues who are always happy to help.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
Overall, I really enjoy my apprenticeship at Cummins. The work is very interesting, it is well structured, and the company as a whole thoroughly cares about their employees and ensure that they are all well looked after. It meets every expectation I think is ideal in an apprenticeship.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
The main skills I have learnt are setting, programming and running CNC machines. As I have also been studying on a HNC mechanical engineering course at Appris Management Ltd, I have learnt a lot about the ways that various systems work and the thought processes behind how they are designed.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The apprenticeship is very well structured. I am always aware of what is expected of me and what I need to do to achieve it. On top of that there is always support if needed.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
The employer's and manager's attitude to looking after their staff is great. I feel as though I am well looked after and there is always support if needed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The tutors are Appris are great for the most part. Most of them are very helpful and want to help you achieve the best grades possible. I had an issue with one tutor and the problem was dealt with after I made a complaint to my employer.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The apprenticeship initially is very specific to your role and can be put into practice. However, in my situation doing a HNC isn't as relevant to machining. Although, it will put me in good stead for further education after the apprenticeship.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
Due to COVID, most of the extra-curricular activities have been put on hold. However, they are starting back up again. There are also some local community activities available which I am currently trying to get involved with.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Cummins to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is a brilliant apprenticeship and company to work for. Absolutely no complaints!
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
Take everything on said to you on board and request feedback if not given. The application process can be very intimidating but everyone is in the same position. Even if you are unsuccessful the first time around, you can always try again!
