Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Footwear construction from start to finish
How to make your very own custom pair of Docs as part of your final project
Various elements of footwear construction – The tanning process, leather inspection and quality control.
The history of footwear and the iconic Dr. Martens brand
How to navigate working relationships within the team, code of conduct and communication methods
Health and Safety practices
Rotation in each of the following rooms within the factory
Clicking: Learning how to operate the cutting presses to specified quality standards and creating the least amount of wastage of skins. Scanning leather for the digital cutters to complete orders.
Closing: Using various sewing machines to make a Dr. Martens upper.
Lasting: The process of shaping the shoe around a last and attaching the sole to our famous yellow stitched welt.
Shoe room: Adding the final touches to our shoes. Lacing, cleaning, and boxing ready for dispatch.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

i did a fashion degree so could already sew but developed my cutting/ sewing skills in the footwear sector. Also learnt lasting shoe room which id never done before

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

It was overall good but unfortunately due to covid there was disruption in 121 on the job training due to 8 week closure and social distancing

Alot, we felt very included in the company
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Northampton college were overall un organised when it came to our exam, however our tutor kevin was amazing and we learnt so much from him
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The variety of things taught gives you good knowledge when working in the footwear industry especially the training on footwear sizing and grading.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

DMs do alot of fun days at work, like dressing up days and celebrations
