Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Understanding the equipment requirements of military front line forces and then liaising with industry partners on the acquisition of equipment which meets the requirements. Finding and implementing engineering solutions to issues which arise in the equipment's operation. Communicating data and information with colleagues, industry partners, maintainers and operators for consistent approaches to projects.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

There is something different each and every day to learn about and get involved in, with ever changing issues and requirements on the equipment. The rotation around the company's different platforms ensures your always learning and developing whilst broadening your engineering knowledge and skills set in a helpful and proactive environment.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Development of problem solving skills using different sources of information and techniques to produce the most accurate results. Presenting and information sharing with colleagues and external industry partners on technical issues. The use of a selection of software packages and IT systems required to carry out a current engineering role.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme works on a strict 6-monthly rotation scheme to ensure your always learning and developing throughout the scheme. If you choose you can extend placements depending on your personal preference. Each placement involves a series of personal objectives to be achieved by completion which are periodically reviewed in detail with multiple stakeholders.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

Your assigned line manager is in regular contact and can address issues in placement teams or academic studies often on your behalf quickly and effectively. Your line manger will help tailor the scheme to your interests and requirements by researching and suggesting placements and other opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Lectures and tutorial sessions take place on a weekly basis where additional support can be accessed. Fortnightly individual reviews are arranged to review progress, offer assistance and raise concerns. Additional revision and drop-in session are arranged for specific exams, coursework or practicals which are required as part of the course.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The degree in aerospace engineering is closely linked with the job role. As the scheme progresses the academic studies allow you to have a greater understanding of your role and the systems which surround, further enhancing your capabilities and job satisfaction. The NVQ Level 4 encourages you to develop the key skills required as an engineering manager.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

When working in placement teams you have a number of opportunities to attend team socials and away days where you can get to know the wider team better and improve working relationships. The company has a number of social sports teams and facilities which can also be used to network with the wider organisation.

Gain a good understanding of the organisations roles and responsibilities within Defence. Demonstrate knowledge and research of pieces of equipment the organisation provides and supports. Highlight activities which demonstrate your team work and communication skills well with different types of people and in different settings. Demonstrate a true interest in engineering and developing as an engineer.
