Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Thermal stability testing of chemicals by heating them to destruction and analysing the resulting data, writing chemical hazard assessments of chemistry based on a preliminary screen of the process or taking experiments performed, analysing and assessing the risks. Training using internal courses, some compulsory some optional, if they will be beneficial to my role.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the work I do on a day to day basis, it's rare any 2 days will be the same which keeps it engaging. I am in a good team with a good dynamic and I have never really had a negative experience when working with anyone from a different team either.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have continually developed my laboratory skills during the apprenticeship, using niche equipment that requires thorough training due to the high risk nature of the equipment and the chemicals used. My report writing style have continually increased as I receive regular feedback sessions on the work I produce during reviews.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is well organised, as I continued on to a BSc from a foundation degree the transition was relatively seamless. The release of work is usually well communicated by the university. There could be more live lectures with the opportunity for Q&A, lots of the the work released was lectures recycled from previous years, but this wasn't necessarily a huge issue as all the info was still there.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

As much as possible really. I was assigned a mentor when I first started however as I have developed I needed them less and less and they just became a colleague really. I have regular meetings with my line manager to discuss progress and any support needed and support is always provided when necessary.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Lots of work and materials are released which does cover the whole module, however lots of it was recycled from previous years - it would have been good to have more regular live online lectures to be able to ask questions easily and get immediate response, however the recorded materials provided were largely of a high quality and easy to learn from.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification does help, lots of the chemistry I learn on the BSc is directly applicable to my role as a scientist. Some of the modules are not relevant to my current role but could be in the future so lays a good ground level of understanding, and a generic chemistry course will always have some parts you do not use in your role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are lots of organised professional networking events with an apprentice council constantly trying to think of new ideas and ways to engage as many apprentices as possible to increase collaboration. There are also lots of events held within the department, again to increase collaboration and sharing so there are lots of possibilities for networking.

Why?
AstraZeneca is a great place to work, it offers a competitive salary, with lots of added benefits on top of that. The culture in the workplace is very good, with everyone happy to collaborate, always willing to give you time to answer any questions you may have. Being in medicine, the work is quite rewarding as well.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
Be honest and be yourself, don't over exaggerate because it always becomes clear in an interview when questioned. However at the same time don't be afraid to sell yourself in a very positive light, think about everything you do even if to you it is small - if it is more than others, it will be clear and perceived well.
