Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Working in the R&D department in Sutton, my tasks were based on assisting the team in updating current and creating new products while ensuring they pass certification standards. The work is Project based. Undertaking projects wherever the team needs and on completion picking up another. This can be Software or hardware and can depend on interests of the employee.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I believe I was given a lot of responsibility as an intern. But I believe this was earnt through proving myself in minor tasks during my first month. I was given real project work and felt like I was solving real problems the team had.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, I showed an interest in software and was placed within the software team. This allowed me to learn from experienced engineers that helped me. I learnt new languages and developed current ones. I also developed my soft skills through internship training sessions and initiatives such as presenting in the team research project or the milestone event.

The guidance I received was good. I had fortnightly meetings with my manager to recap on my work and feedback.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I enjoyed my placement immensely due to the fact I was trusted to undertake important projects. Solving real company problems on industry products was extremely rewarding for me.
