Overview of Experience

Please give an overview of the insight and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
The insight aimed to give a broad exposure to Gibson Dunn and the work of a solicitor there. The scheme included many talks by practice heads with the opportunity to ask extensive questions. In addition, we sat with various supervisors who tasked us with work on their projects including research and drafting. These tasks were always accompanied by thorough feedback after the supervisor had reviewed the work.
What was it like understanding all about the business and potential roles available?
It was tough to approach various experts from different arms of the firm given that the internship was online. However, the firm went above and beyond in organising Q&As with the practice heads. In addition, I found that many senior members of the firm were more than happy to make the time for a call with me when I reached out with questions about their practice and the firms work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
As this was an online scheme due to the pandemic, the scheme afforded the opportunity to develop my skills in independent work considering that contact with fellow interns and supervisors took place over zoom. In addition, I gained further exposure into high profile commercial law and practice with the internship offering real work as opposed to work crafted for interns.

Company Culture

How would you rate business leader involvement during the insight
5/5
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
The company culture valued comradery and commitment. It was apparent that those at the firm understood the work was very tough but rather than fostering a culture of individualism and competitiveness between solicitors, cooperation was encouraged. As my scheme took place during lockdown, I was not able to partake in any in person social activities. However, the firm made sure to organise as many online experiences as possible which were thoroughly enjoyable.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
I thoroughly enjoyed the insight. Although the work was very tough it felt rewarding, especially since the work was related to real projects and the supervisors made sure to give comprehensive feedback. The culture at the firm valued joviality and team work which was an excellent fit for me. As such, when I was offered a training contract I immediately accepted.

Yes
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP
Be prepared to work hard during the vacation scheme. You don't have long to make an impression after only two weeks so it is important that you are proactive in seeking work and following up with supervisors. Demonstrating genuine interest in the various practice areas by researching before asking questions also helps. Avoid asking questions in Q&As which are only designed to show off your knowledge rather than seeking anything insightful.
