Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I usually work with business users and attending various project meetings for providing solutions and input of the application that I am managing. I take on the requirements and translating into technical requirement for our developers who work in pods and explain the expectations required. I involve in helping with the testing and coordinating with business users. I also help to prioritize any work which requires priority according to business deliverables.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I think reading through articles and textbooks that I do not normally go through which I think what I enjoyed about the program. My company has been quite supportive of me doing this apprenticeship program, which I think really helps me to excel with what I will do in the future.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Since I started my apprenticeship, I have learned about DevOps and done more research in understanding the current process on how my organization works. I have picked up some good tools that helps with leadership and innovation with business world. I have recently completed sAFE agile course which is part of the apprenticeship professional course which helps me to get better understanding of scaling larger projects and able to demonstrate that back at my work place.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

No induction at the beginning which I fed back to the program. The first module was very interesting as it was freshly new and I really enjoyed with the participation from different members. I managed to do some feedback from the tutors too.
The second module was slightly alright although I can see the time it took for modules to be made available were slightly delayed. The third module was definitely un-organized as I did not get much support from the blackboard page and felt a bit lost. Although towards the end of Module 3, I understand that a lot of self-study needs to be done and this is now been adapted to my subsequent modules that I am doing now.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

Manager has been really supporting giving me the flexibility for my work and also for me to juggle with the apprenticeship work that I do. When I needed the support, they are available to provide their feedback and keen to allow me to shine within the team and I really appreciate them.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I have a Education support tutor that I have regularly on 2 months basis to track my progress of my apprenticeship and I think that is good for now. I have also make use of the booking which I have with the personal tutor to go through my assignments to give me the best support that I could get.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I think it does as I am working within a DevOps agile team and this qualification has definitely taught me a lot about business and innovation and leadership which is a good learning curve for me to move up the career ladder as a manager. I have tried to apply some of theories into practice through the leadership skills and still trying to put a culture change to the team and department on looking at the DevOps world. It makes me enjoy the work that I do on daily basis.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I seldom attend any networking events organized by the organization. However, I do attend social activities drinks with my team members within the team. some of the other events including Christmas and Summer events with the department. As I am working from home most of the time, I use the gym around my neighborhood for workout and that has been a great way to distress and getting healthier mentally and physically.

Why?
HSBC is multi-cultural, global and large organization, where one could see lots of different opportunities to grow and expand their skills. Not only they get to learn new skills but also given great opportunity to grow with the company and able to climb the career ladder. The mobility scheme to move around and taking opportunities around the globe is one of the best thing working in a large organization has to offer.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to HSBC?
Be prepared and be yourself. HSBC values different opinions and open to different culture and ideas on providing a solution. The bank encourages innovations to allow best solution been developed and released into public. The onboarding process may take slightly longer due to long winded process. However, I believe by having the Can Do attitude, anything can be done!
