Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As part of the apprenticeship I perform high-accuracy measurements of large-volume components to ensure that they conform to manufacturing/design specifications. We create reports afterwards and communicate the results to the appropriate stakeholders
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
The program overall has been great. Upon entering the business I was trusted to hit the ground running and have been given the opportunity to push myself with a variety of projects, some of which have been warmly received by the business as a whole.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I've developed my maths skills greatly as it forms a key part of measurement uncertainty and measurement system analysis. Team working and forward planing are two soft skills that were developed through liaising with other departments and stakeholders as well.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The initial stages, wherein we were in college were difficult due to disorganisation of the training provider, but the in-role experience has been well structured, with the added bonus of having numerous people who are easy to contact and speak to regarding any changes you might want to make.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I'm fully supported in my role by a team who are eager to get you up to speed and very well interlinked, so it's easy to ask for help or guidance when needed. The early careers representative in my experience have been uniformly fantastic.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
This has been very spotty. The initial period of college was very arduous and made for an unnecessary barrier to entering the workplace. The university providing the degree has been much better and has been keeping on top as much as they can, although the failing university sector has impacted that somewhat.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
In terms of theory, it has helped me greatly, not so much on the practical side, but learning how better to apply measurement principles has made me a better inspector and has transferred well to my main role, which has been picked up on members of my team
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
There are plenty of extra-curricular groups to join, be it for mental health purposes, just finding games to play with your peers, or just to network. There are many resources for members of minority groups as well, which is very appreciated and allows you to find like-minded people easily.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I think overall, after you get past the college section of the apprenticeship, you can really progress in your role, and you'll get good acknowledgement of your growth and achievements. The pay is pretty exceptional for your experience level, especially if you're a school leaver, and the growth opportunities are plentiful.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Ask everyone every question you can. I can guarantee someone has asked something sillier! The vast majority of people will just help you do whatever you feel you need to. So apply for as many opportunities as you can and get stuck in!
