Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I’m doing a dual apprenticeship. working on the overhead lines and underground cables. i work out on site with experienced craftsmen who show me what they’re doing and explain it to me well. i also do college and training so i can work to the best i can
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
i actually really enjoy it. i always wanted to do a practical job and that is certainly what i have here. i like the overhead part as i love heights. i’ve enjoyed meeting new people and getting to share the experience with them.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learned how to climb, how to work with love electricity. i’ve learned new teamwork skills and communication skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
i think it is very organised. they know what we’ll be doing college and training wise over a year in advance. they set targets for us 13 weekly to ensure we are staying up to date
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
we receive a lot of support whether we are struggling at work or personally. for me, i had been struggling at home and my employer did my best to help me and set me up for counciling
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
we receive a lot of support to work towards our qualifications. we have reviews to make sure we know we can talk to the employer and get help if we need to, they go over what you’re not too sure on to ensure you’re doing the best you can
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
i think that working towards the qualification makes you work harder for one, but it also gives you such a closer insite as to what it is you’re doing as a job and helps you understand it in depth rather than just doing it practically
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
i know there is a cycle to work campaign, the company is trying to get more people into that. there is a lot of teamwork within the company. At college there is a push for everyone to get involved with sports and extra activities for us. the teachers sometimes even stay late to get involved!

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend SSE to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I think they’re a great company to work for. they don’t only help you be good for their company but they help you be better for yourself as well. they help you a lot with anything you may need and don’t try and push too much on you.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
ensure that something practical is what you want to do. that is certainly what you’ll get. do your research on the company, know what it is you’re applying for.
