Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I am an apprentice Linesman and also a jointer. When a linesman i work on the overhead lines, maintaining them and sorting faults. When a jointer i work with the underground cables, mainly working at new housing developments installing cutouts and joining services. There is also some work in the streets.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my apprenticeship, everything is given to us clearly by our managers, I really enjoyed physics at school so i knew i wanted to do something electrical and this ticks every box. I work with a great bunch of people too which tops it off. Would recommend definitely.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt heaps of new skills. Skills such as being able to supply point test, climb poles and being able to join cables together, Also, how the overhead lines work. Ive developed my communication skills and teamwork skills being part of the linesman team as we are always working together and looking out for eachother.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
Like i said in the previous question, its really well organised. I get emails telling me when im down at the sse training school down in Perth and get daily updates. During my induction before starting out on field, i got told everything about the apprenticeship from start to finish.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive a lot of support, i get 13 week reviews just to see how everything is getting on and i get objectives to complete before my next review. I get everything i ask for such as PPE. Also get my trains and hotel paid for which is a big support
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I receive a lot of support. I have just finished an 11 week LV jointing course and would not have managed without the great trainers. I have also received and took part in a first aid course which is given to every SSE employee which is a great thing in my opinion
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I would not be able to do my job without the training as it would be breaking the law. I can not work on live cables / conductors unless i receive the correct training. However the training is really good quality and learn a lot when im in perth at the training school
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
I believe there is but i am actually not one hundred percent sure. I am sure we go round schools teaching children about the work we do and all about electricity to try populate the company and to help recruit. This is a really good thing as helps teach from a young age

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend SSE to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Very good company to work for, it is a job for life. Everyone i have met so far who works for SSE have been at the company for many many years and always say they cant recommend working for this company enough. The training recieved is top notch too, perfect all round
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
Just to apply and try your best as i am sure you will love it. If its not safe, we dont do it. As long as you stick to the company moto everything will go smoothly as you are in a safe place. Apply and do not turn back, you wont regret it.
