Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
As I am at the start of my apprenticeship I dont have a clearly defined role, most of my time involves assisting my mentor in Lab-based activities (Immunohistochemistry Assays) and the occasional image analysis. Other free time is spent training on Lab-skills, such as sectioning, as well as completing Uni work
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
Overall I quite enjoy the program as there is a lot of interesting work that takes place and the people are really lovely and welcoming. Although I don't do a massive range of activities now, that will change as time goes on and it is exciting to see where the apprenticeship will take me.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I have found communication to be very important as people are always willing to help but are often too busy to notice if you need help and so asking for help goes a long way. I have also improved my presentation skills throughout presentation workshops and in relaying information to my team.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The Uni structure is pretty good with online modules and review trackers and all the information is there to see your progress and what is expected of you. On the work aspect, things are a lot less planned and a lot of the learning comes from shadowing the correct people at the right time, meaning it takes longer to learn things but there is less pressure also.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
My employer has been really supportive in all aspects. There is lots of useful resources available ranging from mental health tools to free day trip out. With regards to the work, there is a very relaxed feel in the early stages whilst you learn all the systems and equipment and little pressure from the employer.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
The training provider takes a hands-off approach. They are very helpful and willing to support you, however you have to reach out and explain your situation. Occasionally communication can be a bit difficult and it would be nice to receive lectures to supplement the study guide, which currently means just taking notes.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
As I am relatively new still it is difficult to say. Most of the content I have covered so far has been re-capping A-level biology and chemistry. There have been a few more practical-focussed topics, however they haven't been used as part of my role yet but may do in the future.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
There are occasional opportunities to go to external conferences and internal AZ conferences within different sites. There are also the occasional work team meet-ups as well as apprentice meet-ups, roughly every 2-4 weeks. Some sites have gyms as well and the options for sports clubs such as a lunch time football club.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend AstraZeneca to a friend?
Yes
Why?
There is a very friendly atmosphere at work and everyone is willing to help out and to make you feel welcome and integrated into the team and the wider community. The company also takes good care of its staff and there is a lot of emphasis on personal wellbeing and you are given the flexibility to help facilitate this.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
Research potential interview questions (both for AstraZeneca and generically) and plan answers for those questions and make sure to learn them. Not learning a full script but a prompt so that it flows naturally in context. Also make sure to be aware if the 5 company values and times which you have shown them.
