Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
My role is mostly lab-based, performing experiments to support a range of pipeline projects, as well as general activities relating to upkeep and running of the lab. Time outside of the lab is often spent writing up experiments, attending training, as well as bring an active member of project team discussions.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I enjoy my programme because it is very hands-on and practical, and I am able to learn and apply and range of different skills - at no point am I just doing the same thing every day - which makes the apprenticeship both interesting and challenging. I really like that I can do this whilst also gaining my degree qualification.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Over the course of my apprenticeship I have continued to develop skills and gain expertise in my "base" function, but have also been able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team learning skills outside of my regular role which I have also applied to delivering pipeline projects. This has enhanced my understanding of the drug discovery process.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
When I first started, the programme was close to bring in its infancy and therefore came with some loose ends. However, I have seen the programme develop and become much more structured with new intakes starting at the same time meaning that key milestones and training often line up with each other.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
AstraZeneca has a great support network for apprentices, and well as for employees in general. We have line managers for support, as well as mentors, and central apprenticeship partners for any guidance or help who are in regular contact with the training providers. No question is silly to ask, and they will always do their best to help.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
I have less contact with the training provider since it is all online learning. However, they hold regular sessions where we can ask any questions or have one on one help. They can also be contacted by instant message. We have regular reviews over Teams to check in on our performance and whether we are on track.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The qualification has provided the theory behind a lot of the activities I do for my job, in addition to key concepts in Biology and Chemistry which I might not necessarily cover during my job. I like this because I can apply what I learn to my job, as well as having transferrable knowledge for the future.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
The pandemic has caused a reduction in these sorts of activities (understandably). However, some social activities have continued online. We have employee resource groups which have a specific focus (e.g. Early Careers, LGBT+, Mental Health etc) but can be joined by anyone and get involved with social and development initiatives.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend AstraZeneca to a friend?
Yes
Why?
This apprenticeship has been a brilliant opportunity to gain my degree without the tuition fees, develop important skills which employers are looking for, all whilst playing a key role in the drug discovery process at a reputable pharmaceutical company. Apprentices could be finishing with 5+ years of experience, a bachelor's degree, and apprenticeship qualification under their belt which will provide a great foundation when applying to jobs either within the company or elsewhere.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
One of the best qualities an apprentice can have is enthusiasm to learn in the chosen field. I believe it matters less what you are starting with - you can have zero experience but if you show a big interest in the subject area and can apply that to wanting to learn new skills, I would say this is a key quality to have.
