Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Waking up and signing onto ‘My Jobs’ on my phone and fixing faults on customers telephone/broadband line as well as installing new broadband. Some days I may have to climb telegraph poles to fix a fault or replace a dropwire, as well as going into the Underground box’s to fix a fault
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I have enjoyed this apprenticeship as most of it has been out in the field so I have learned a lot of new skills and done things I never thought I would’ve done. It has also been quick difficult at times but I’ve had a lot of support.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Before this role I wasn’t a very confident person especially when it came to speaking to strangers but now after a year of speaking to customers daily I have developed my communication skills which includes trying to explain things in a way that a customer would understand as they usually have no knowledge of the network.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
I think it is very well structured as most of the work is out in the field which I feel helps me to learn things a lot faster than if I was just sitting at a computer screen watching videos all day. But it is also nice to have the odd day on computers to give your body a rest.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I have received a lot of support from my employer and they are always available when I need something from them. I’ve had regular chats with my manager about how I’m getting on with the job and we also speak about things I can improve on.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a lot of support from my training provider and they are also available to help whenever I am stuck with something or need extra resources to help me with things such as revision for my knowledge test. They usually reply to any emails on the same day which is really helpful.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
My qualification has helped me a lot because it’s allowed me to learn things that may not have been covered thoroughly in the training centre and also it has given me a chance to speak to other people doing the qualification and speak about our experiences with the job.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
There aren’t any sport activities that I know of although I do think something like a football match would be fun and a good chance for everyone to get together outside of work. There are a lot of people on the team that I don’t know very well so it would be a good chance for me to get to know them.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would definitely recommend BT to a friend because it is a great opportunity to learn multiple skills as well as receive a lot of good benefits that you wouldn’t get with other companies such as cheaper internet/phones. Also there is a lot of other career paths to go down if you don’t enjoy the one you start in.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
If you want a job where you get your own van, get to be outside all day and enjoy a different challenge every day then this is the job for you. I would also make sure you are comfortable with climbing and being at height as some people don’t realise that until after they start training.
