Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Within my first year of this apprenticeship that I have completed thus far I have been predominantly college based completing a Level 2 NVQ in Aerospace Engineering alongside a Level 4 HNC in Aerospace Engineering to be followed by a HND and BEng top-up. Within my first year, day-to-day, I have been in various workshops at college learning and developing practical skills across composites, sheet metal, CAD and electronics. The exception to this being my Higher Education (HE) study day - one day a week to attend the HNC/D classes and lectures.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I am currently enjoying my program very much. The workload is challenging but manageable, me and my colleges support and strengthen each others abilities and work together well in a friendly environment. There is a strong sense of community within the company and my classes which makes everything even more enjoyable.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learned many new skills, mostly in practical areas such as the manufacture of composite and sheet metal parts and their assembly which come alongside a wide set of broader engineering skills such as creating and reading engineering drawings and producing CAD models and prototypes of parts. Additionally I have developed many skills as a result of HE learning this is because there is a high level or research and referencing required to complete assignments to the best standards. I have been taught proper researching, referencing and information sourcing techniques which will be even more useful as move into the Level 5/6 parts of the apprenticeship.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Thus far the program has been well structured, a clear and informative induction was given at the beginning of the programme. Training has been structured well with it being made clear which modules and units we are expected to complete and to what standard. There has been great unconditional support offered and provided throughout studies and regular one-to-ones with training managers means progress is closely monitored so any necessary support can be provided.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

Support received from the employer has been good. HR were very helpful while getting started and enrolled the following induction and after being introduce to my training manager there has continued to be a good level of contact where any support I require can be offered. Overall the company and managers show a strong desire to push me to do my very best and are happy to offer any support required for me to do that.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The support from Yeovil College throughout training and study has been excellent. Tutors are very passionate about the content and convey this through their teaching. The are very good at ensuring content is understood and if it isn't they are always happy to offer their support. There is also a great level of support available through the college library and University Centre.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification is going to help me to perform better in my role because the course is tailored for the apprentice and tutors often relate things I'm learning to the company and the products we produce. The qualification also allows me to gain a greater depth of understanding into the industry.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There is a plethora of extra-curricular activities to get involved in at work. AWASA (The Apprentice & Student Association at Leonardo) regularly hosts social and sporting events which are great fun to get involved in. Additionally there are numerous charity and fundraising events held which support the local community. For me I have even been lucky enough to even be involved in a professional networking event early in my apprenticeship.

Would you recommend Leonardo to a friend?

Why?

I would recommend undertaking an apprenticeship at Leonardo to a friend because you will receive high level training and support allowing you to excel and gain the apprenticeship qualifications which will in turn greatly support you in completion of placements within the company. Completing an apprenticeship at Leonardo feels rewarding as you are appreciated by the company and recognized for your achievements.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Leonardo?

For anyone wishing to apply for an apprenticeship at Leonardo here are the tips I would give you:
Get in the door early - Do your research into application windows and the application process in order to get you application as soon as you can!
Go in prepared - Ensure you are familiar with the company, its history, its products and work that is currently ongoing. Showing that you are actively engaged in following the business will be noticed.
Don't be afraid to ask questions - Asking inquisitive questions is a great way to express you interest and engagement with the company, relate the questions to your research to demonstrate that you already have a good understanding but are still eager to learn more.
