Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

What i do as a quantity surveyor on a day to day basis, is submit payments for subcontractors, look after any CE's that could potentially help us make money. I also do take offs when required, as they can be used to put an estimation on the quarterly final.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I am enjoying every moment of this program. I've been put on a very interesting project near my region and i was fortunate enough to be put in a very helpful team, who are supporting me through this whole programme and have not let me down until this day.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Prior to me starting with BAM I had a small amount of knowledge when it came to excel, but as soon as i started i could seem myself gradually improving from time to time. Another skill i developed on was my problem solving skills, due to this job having many different problems, overtime i started to learn what i need to look for in certain types of problems i come across and what to look for.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

The BAM apprenticeship programme, is one of the the most effective methods, as it give you that hands on experience, which is what anyone needs if they are wanting to learn and develop skills. We have a college block, where for 9 weeks we just study and don't work, then after those 9 weeks we go back to work and stay there for another 10 months.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I've been put with a very supportive team on my project, they are always pushing me to do new things, so that i don't limit myself. They've even went that extra mile to help me with my college work and my KSB. I don't think i could've asked for a better team.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

They are very supportive, as i said they always push me and give me a hand with anything work or college related, took a while to get used to them but now we're just one big commercial family. As i am the new apprentice, I've got everyone supporting me when i need them to.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

This programme isn't just about the qualification, because i get the chance to work on site i have a hands on experience and that in itself helps me perform better in my role, but the qualification is the icing on top, which i am looking forward to in the next couple of years.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

At work we have football every Wednesday, where we all go out and play football. This helped me build the relationship with everyone that works on site. Another networking event is the commercial forum, where i get useful advice regarding vital methods, which are used by the commercial team on site, e.g. cost monitoring, AFP, QF and many more.

Why?
If you are looking for a way to grow while learning, in both aspects, on site and in your college block then this programme is perfect for you but that willingness to learn will needs to elevate and shouldn't be affected whether your in college or at work because without that mind set, it would be a bit difficult to soak everything in.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
Don't stress and get all anxious prior to your interview, make sure you have a bottle of water next to you and breath before you speak, as that'll keep you calm. The assessment day is straight forward there is nothing to stress about. You won't be assessed on rocket science, it will be simple and easy.
