Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

As an electronics engineering apprentice I rotate around different departments as well as going to college to complete theory work. Day-to-day I do work for the department I am in by creating, testing, and repairing the electronic systems that they use.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

This apprenticeship shows you a wide range of possible work within your discipline, and gets you familiar with the unique work that STFC does. This makes it really enjoyable as each placement you are doing something new.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, I have developed my basic skills in soldering and fault finding, and have been taught how to complete tests on equipment, as well as many other skills.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

STFC are well organised, and the structure of my apprenticeship has been clear since the beginning. They show a good awareness of areas for development within the apprenticeship programme, and take action to improve them.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

STFC provides many programmes to support employees with extra needs, transport, well being, learning and development, and more.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The current training provider is not well organised, and often do not supply appropriate resources.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The training provider provides some basic skills but they are heavily focused on mechanical engineering, which is frustrating for electrical/electronic engineering apprentices.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Yes

Why?

STFC are focused on helping all their apprentices to achieve the best they can, and they will support you to further your career. It is also a very interesting place to work where you get to be involved with large-scale projects to further scientific knowledge.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)?

If you are applying to STFC it is important to show your passion for STEM. They will teach you the skills and knowledge you need to do the job, but you need to be interested in what you are doing, and work hard to get all that you can out of the apprenticeship
