Software engineer Review

Writing software using EPICS to communicate with scientific equipment and provide scientists with a ui with which to control the devices for use in their experiments.

Yes I was given my own projects to work on independently which I was solely responsible for and saw through from requirement gathering to deployment.

I gained a lot more experience in using C, C++, Linux and git as well as experience working under the agile process. I also learnt EPICS and SNL. My skills in programming overall and the going through the software development and testing process have significantly improved over the course of my placement. There were a lot of opportunities for training and development courses.

My team were incredibly supportive, they were all always happy to answer questions and explain things when needed.

My team are all incredibly friendly and welcoming, I never was made to feel like just an intern and was treated like any other member of the team. Definitely watch out for the really bad dad-jokes though...
There's lots of social events like lunchtime quizzes, boardgames and yoga and there's a lot of other placement/graduate students so it's easy to make new friends.

I found the work very fulfilling, I enjoyed the tasks themselves but also I enjoyed knowing the scientists who are using my software and the experiments they're using it for especially because a lot of the research here is so new and exciting. The culture here is really nice, everyone is super friendly and supportive and you're encouraged to take any opportunity to learn new things. Overall I've really enjoyed my time here.
