Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My day-to-day role includes the managing of works to ensure that they are completed to the agreed standard with regards for Health, Safety, Cost and Quality. I manage a team of contractors including carrying out daily meetings to plan works, as well as weekly meetings with the project managers to coordinate works further in the future.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I thoroughly enjoy my programme and the opportunities it has allowed me to be a part of. I have had excellent work based, and personal, opportunities throughout my time. I receive great support from members of my direct team as well as those in the wider business, and the HR team.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
Over the past 5 years of my Apprenticeship I have learnt lots of new skills, to many to mention, and expanded my knowledge of the construction industry significantly. I feel i am a confident person who can lead teams and speak confidently when it comes to works on site within my area of responsibility.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
From my experience the the programme is very well organised. Regular updates are given by the HR team and training plans and invites are sent with plenty of notice. The structure is also good, with regular generalised training throughout the first years of the apprenticeship with less and more specific training later on in the programme.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I have received great support from my employer. The HR team look after you well ensuring plenty of relevant training as well as team building events. Support from my direct team is also great, with them having a good understanding of both my limitations and ambitions and giving me support in the relevant areas.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
The support from my training provider has been good. There are offerings of support in place and some of the modules we take part in are directly targeted towards development of soft skills that we can implement directly in the workplace. Courses such as Professional Development are offered and personal tutors provided.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The theoretical knowledge I learn at university acts as a good base on site when carrying out works. For example the detailed knowledge of how structures works allows me to better inspect and look after structural frame works. The knowledge you learn at university helps to back up decisions made on site
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are many activities to get involved in through work. Social events are regular, and a good effort was made during Lockdowns to keep the team engaged, which is continuing while some of the team continue to work from home. There is a wide range of activities offered so all the team feels included.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mace to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Mace Group is a great place to work, they are innovative, forward thinking and redefining the boundaries of ambition. They offer brilliant support for everyone throughout the business, and you have access to people at all levels, from fellow apprentices through to company directors. This is something that is not so prevalent within the industry for such a large company.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace?
Mace Group are not looking for people who know everything, they are interested in development and would rather you have a passion to learn and push yourself rather than thinking you are already the best about. Asking questions and being a people person will help you go a long way, in this industry social and intellectual skills are equally as important.
