Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I look at drawings and schedules to gather the details and information to create pieces of data such as a 'material schedule' (what is needed, quantity, when is it needed for), creating task briefs for the works, working with CAD (computer-aided drawing) drawings to find needed dimensions. On site daily tasks can involve using a GPS and other surveying equipment to find different data around site.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy the work that I am being involved in as well as my team who are all very patient considering I am new to the industry which I am thankful for. Everyone is very accepting and involving in the Bam team. I was unsure on what to expect seeing as civil engineering is a male dominated industry but everyone is treated respectfully and as equals no matter of age or experience.

I am learning new skills daily in regards to the work that is being done, studying
towards the L4 construction site engineering qual. There is a variety of courses available to further my knowledge such as Health and Safety. My communication and interacting skills progress as i meet new people who work in the industry learning about the variety of aspects involved in a project you gain confidence by interacting with a diverse group of people. I have learnt that there is a large amount of time and effort put in to even just a small part of a project such as inserting a water duct which may be vital in the larger works.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

This programme is well organised in the way of studying at college is done in a block so you can focus on your work and not have other distractions. There is plenty support available through both the company and college. Everyone is helpful and eager to aid you in any way for both work and personal life
How much support do you receive from your employer?

There are numerous webinars and talks through the company which is helpful to listen to other peoples views. You are offered a mentor to have someone in the company to talk to and have another point of contact even if they're not based on your project or sector. If there are any problems or issues someone will be available to help as soon as possible.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

You will only be in contact with your lecturers at college when you are there as there is no need to stay in touch unless there are issues with the work. However there are numerous tutors who you can get in touch with at any time who will guide you through the apprenticeship program and gather all the criteria needed to progress through the program.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Some of the units studied in college are used in daily rolls such as surveying and construction information which is involved in a civil engineers day to day role. The practical work and knowledge in surveying contributes to what is put in practice on site. Completing this qualification boosts the understanding of different design principles and mathematical problem solving.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

In regards to company events and activities there is a lack of that since starting in September, however this can be put down to the restrictions of Covid-19. Hopefully in the future social events will be available more. This can be classed as team building which in turn boosts the teams moral.

Why?
It is a very impressive apprenticeship scheme, by learning and gaining experience directly as well as studying towards qualifications (Eng tech and Bachelors degree). Bam is a highly respectable company in the construction industry which gives you the opportunity of visiting and living in new places not just across the country but across the world if you put the time and effort in which is very appealing.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
Do you research on the industry and the skills involved in what it takes to be successful in this industry you can never have too much knowledge. Get work experience in the industry to see if you would enjoy working in construction. Be willing to say yes to any learning venture or opportunity as any connection is a good connection. If you are prepared with different experiences revolving working as a team and collaboratively that would be beneficial.
