Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I create 3D models and 2D drawings. As I am a beginner apprentice, I don't hand anything back to the engineers so everything I do is practice for the future. I have learnt three types of software so far: OpenBuildings Designer, AutoCAD and Revit. I use these to produce my drawings.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really do enjoy my program as it teaches me lots of different things that I will need to know for the rest of my career. As I have been interested in engineering since I first joined secondary, I can see my previous skills being developed everyday as well as using lots of new information that will broaden my knowledge of engineering.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have adopted many skills from my apprenticeship: team working, time management, focus, software use, work and college balance, working to deadlines, using my time wisely and not getting distracted, and learning from my mistakes. I have also grown to start checking my work more thoroughly and taking my time in order to not make as many mistakes in the long run.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
I feel as though my programme is very structured as I will often find things that I learn in college cross over well with things that I am doing at work. I am a structural technician apprentice and a great deal of what we learn in college is structural based too!
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I receive lots of support from my employer. They will give me time do do my college work during work hours if I need to catch up and if I'm ever struggling or confused about something college - related then my mentor will help me to gain understanding before my lesson.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I feel like my training provider would support me if I needed help, but I am yet to ask them for any assistance. I only attend college once a week and as I have already done a level 3 in the past it has helped me know what the assignments are asking. However, they have provided me with good learning resources.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I feel as though the qualification is bettering my performance in my role because it teaches me relevant topics and software that I will also use at work. I have a better understanding of the details as to why somethings happening or what something is instead of knowing the brief explanation.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are many extra-curricular events that take place at work or after work hours. There are many sports teams and clubs available for anyone to join. there are also lots of opportunities to go to social events after work, which can vary from drinks to mini golf. these events are very welcoming.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Arup to a friend?
Yes
Why?
They are a great company with their employees truly at the heart of everything. they give very fair opportunities and pride some of the best and unique project opportunities. the social aspects are inclusive and very friendly. you will be supported greatly through your role, especially as an apprentice.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Arup?
Don't be afraid to ask questions, everyone is so welcoming and friendly so do not hesitate to ask for help. It can seem very overwhelming at the beginning and may be frightening but after as month you will feel so comfortable at work and with your team. It's awesome.
