Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role involves assisting engineers on a day to day basis with the design of mechanical and electrical fit out building services systems. This involves assisting with calculations, layouts, meetings and construction activities. Working alongside various consultants such as architects, structural engineers, specialist design consultants and various others to produce a co-ordinated design.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy my programme because of the unique opportunities it presents on a day to day basis. this means i am not just sitting in the office every day with the same tasks and activities. i have the opportunity to meet new people and travel to various sites to learn and develop in unique situations.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

The main aspect of my skills that I have developed is the confidence in the workplace and outside of the workplace. this includes my confidence when meeting others within the industry and during workplace activities such as meetings and events. I have also developed skills in different software such as excel and design software.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

my apprenticeship programme is well structured so that all the hard work is done for you. the programme is set up so that you have a clear understanding of the roadmap you will be moving along throughout your apprenticeship. this means that with the required effort and attention an apprentice can develop throughout the process.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

i receive sufficient support from my employer and more so the peers within my company and degree qualification. there are various peers within my workplace with all areas of engineering expertise that i can learn from. this also means at any time i can seek the correct guidance from the right peer to develop my knowledge or solve a problem.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

i receive sufficient support from my training provider towards my qualifications. on the level 3 apprenticeship i received support via weekly catch up meetings to discuss my progression on the apprenticeship. on the higher apprenticeship i have semester reviews with a skills reviewer to discuss my progress and any help i require.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

the qualification provides me with a developed technical background knowledge to use alongside the skills and behaviour i have developed in the workplace. the qualification also allows me to track and review the progress i have made within the workplace to highlight weaker areas of knowledge and skills that need attention.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

there are extra-curricular activities to be involved in at work. most Thursdays the younger group of colleagues commonly go out for drinks at the local pub. there are group wide social events organised quarterly and also the opportunity to attend project social activities such as events and factory visits to the manufacturer.

Would you recommend Troup Bywaters + Anders LLP to a friend?

Why?

i would suggest TBA to a friend as an apprentice due to the knowledge and skills you will develop through the various stages of the apprenticeship. this includes both personal and technical development. the main aspect of the apprenticeship being the gain in confidence and personal skills that will be utilized throughout life.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Troup Bywaters + Anders LLP?

i would suggest proactively monitoring and developing what you have learned and are aiming to learn. this can be a knowledge and information tracker with everything you have learnt throughout your apprenticeship. this means an apprentice can understand areas with a lack of knowledge or experience. therefore the work you are given can be tailored to suit your weakness and utilize your strengths.
