Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I spend most of my time in the lab performing experiments to develop assays that can measure efficacy of cancer drugs. Outside of the lab, I analyse results and attend team and project meetings.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy it a lot as I am constantly learning new things because everyone in my team & in other teams are so experienced and are always happy to help and teach me new things. There are also different employee resource groups that hold events for networking with other people from different areas of the company.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I started with no experience in the lab other than school work so I have learnt numerous different scientific techniques; western blot, ELISA, Immunofluorescence, cell and tissue fixation and sectioning. I have also developed personal skills including presentation skills, communication and time management.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The work I do at AstraZeneca is very well organised, I have a 'buddy' who is an older apprentice who I can ask anything. I also have my supervisor with whom I have weekly catch ups in which I will get any extra support if needed. I have one study day a week which is distance learning & I have a review with my university supervisor very 3 months.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Everyone I have met and asked for help/information have given me support & often gone above and beyond to help me. My supervisor supports me constantly and always ensures my work to study balance is right. I have a buddy who I can ask any general questions. There are also IT & HR support teams who assist with any needs.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I have 4-5 review meetings a year in which I can ask for any support. I am also able to contact and set up 1-1 calls with the module convenors if I need any academic help.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

What I learn in my degree helps me to understand the work that I do day to day, without studying for the qualification at the same time I feel it would've taken me a lot longer to learn and understand my work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There are many employee resource groups that hold different events such as social, self-improvement, networking, mental-wellbeing & they also provide many opportunities to share our work with other apprentices. My wider team also has a retreat annually in which we all attend and share our work, our ideas, network & socialise.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
Take any opportunities in which you will gain experience to show willingness to learn. In the actual application and interview process just be honest, be yourself and demonstrate why you would be a good employee.
