Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a first year laboratory scientist apprentice working in Product development as a formulation scientist. I work on planning and executing experiments and interpreting and presenting the data that is generated. I assist in the formulation development activities within PT&D working on liquid drug formulations.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I am really enjoying working at AstraZeneca as a science apprentice as I have been able to get involved with projects and be a part of the drug development process and I am constantly learning along the way and applying what I learn at uni to the industry.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt how to use various formulation instruments as well as how to plan, execute and record experiments. I have gained lab skills and knowledge and have developed my presentation, planning and communication skills which has enabled me to become a valuable member of the team.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programme is a 5 year programme which involves 20% off the job working. My work learning is integrated with my modules at uni and I also align tasks with objectives set by the university.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have been encouraged to build my network across the company and I have various contacts that I can go to for support at different levels of organisation. This includes a buddy, mentor, manager and apprentice advisor. There are also many resources which can provide guidance/support.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I have an apprenticeship advisor who I can contact with any questions/concerns about my apprenticeship and I can also contact my module convenors for support regarding modules and assignments.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

Studying Applied Bioscience with the university of Kent allows me to build my background knowledge of biology which I can then apply to the work I am involved in and I can better understand the biochemical mechanisms that are central to drug development.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There is an apprentice network that hold social and networking events. I also take part in AZinspire events which is a network that supports early careers. There are various workplace groups that you can be a part of that share knowledge and hold events.

AstraZeneca have an amazing apprenticeship scheme with great connections to education providers and have a huge amount of support in place for apprentices. Apprentices are encouraged and supported to thrive in their early careers.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
If you are considering applying to an AstraZeneca Apprenticeship try and have a clear idea of what interests you about the industry and the job role. Really think what you could bring to the industry and why you want to work there.
