Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Daily tasks - Issue/submit quotes, meet client / contractors to review works, set contractors to work
Interactions internally - Liaise with Site / H&S / Quality / Leaning & Development teams Interactions externally - Liaise with Client / contractors
Responsibilities - Managing projects from Small works to Large variations.
Projects - K1 Knightsbridge (2020-2021), Barts & Royal London Contract (2021 - Present)
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Work - Very varied work within many different fields e.g., mechanical, electrical, public health, project management.
Team - Very supportive towards development of young apprentices
Company culture - Culture built around creating a safer and cleaner built environment, committed to net zero carbon.
Do you enjoy it? Yes, very varied role with new challenges every day.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Qualifications - Achieved level 3 Btec Diploma in construction & the built environment, working towards Level 4 HNC in Building services engineering.
Internal training courses - Competent persons courses inc. HVAC CP
External training courses - Site awareness courses inc. Lifting awareness

How well organised/structured is your programme?

Induction - Apprentice / corporate / H&S induction received in first 6 months.
Training - All types of training available in company portal.
Support - Very supportive learning & development team readily available.
Studying - Weekly college days organised by L&D team.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Your line manager will give you as much support as is available, but you will find yourself working with all members of your team in early stages of your career. You can be appointed a mentor who will be an apprentice in later stages of the scheme for technical advice.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
LSBU provide a weekly day release college course where you will learn electrical, mechanical, public health engineering, as well as project management skills to develop you in your role at Skanska. It is also a great place to meet other engineers and build a network of contacts within the industry.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
I work in a project management role, so learning MEP engineering helps me understand the projects that I am looking after or assisting in, which will help me make better decisions when quoting work / materials, creating technical submittals, setting contractors to work, and snagging work for defects / issues.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

There is many networks that you can get involved with at Skanska, for example: LGBT+, Disability & Careers, Military, Womxn, Mental health, Etc. There are also yearly 'lend a hand' days where you can get involved with local communities to volunteer in activities such as Painting and decorating, charity event, Etc.

Why?
Its a very supportive company for young apprentices looking to break into the construction industry, with a strong development plan from years 1-5 of the scheme, with good opportunities to progress further to Assistant PM and PM roles after the scheme, as well as a competitive pay rate
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Skanska?
You will benefit most from the apprenticeship by getting your A levels before joining as an apprentice. This will enable you to begin you L4 HNC or Be Eng in your first year and put you ahead in your career progression.
