Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

My role consists of installing FTTP Fibre to the premises broadband into homes and business and also finding and fixing faults. My role also requires me to assist other engineers/contractors when needed such as a safety assist.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy the apprenticeship! There is always lots of support available and a lot of opportunities for me to go on additional courses to widen my skill set.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed my communication skills from working in customers homes on a daily basis. Having not come from an engineering background, I have learnt how the telecoms network works and how to identify components that make up the network and also how to find and fix faults.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

90% of the apprenticeship is you working out in the field and we have monthly meet ups with our assessor which is either in person on online.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Huge amount of support is available, can always contact fellow engineers, patch lead or manager for help/advice. And if struggling on something such as a big job there is always engineers who are able to come and give you a hand.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The assessors regularly provide us with feedback on our work and give us advice on what we need to do to achieve a higher grade.
Although we meet up once a month with the assessor they are always a phone call or email away for support.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

If I’m honest there is a part of the apprenticeship that relates to the copper side of the network whereas I’m only a fibre engineer I don’t work with copper this can be a struggle however the support is available.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I’m not personally involved in any activities however Openreach does has a huge amount of social activities and the list is endless, this information can be found on the intranet.

Yes
Why?
I love how you can organise your day however you like, although there are targets to meet it’s not like you’ve got your managers on your case 24/7 like some jobs.
There is loads of help and support available and everyone is nice to work with

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
You don’t need any previous engineering background, the main things Openreach want to see is that your good with customers and that you have a safety first mindset all the time.
