Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

A typical day includes responding to emails, a team meeting, lab work and data analysis work at the computer. The lab work involves a variety of Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetic studies for instance; plasma stability, AO stability, metabolite identification incubations or pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic studies. There are also opportunities to present scientific data.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The apprenticeship programme is throughly enjoyable as it has taught many skills and provided plenty of opportunities for growth. It has been supportive from all aspects. It’s an excellent way to gain practical in the field experience whilst not missing out on the crucial and theoretical university based work. All whilst getting paid!
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Throughout the apprenticeship I have developed a variety of skills. Softer skills include presentation skills, interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills, organisation, punctuality, time management and how to prioritise tasks. The scientific skills have also been developed including theoretical knowledge and the application of this knowledge to lab based work.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The apprenticeship programme is very well structured. One day a week is allocated as a study day, where the university course is covered and you complete any assignments or extra reading. The other four days are for work based learning whether it be in the lab or at a desk. The university course is structured like a normal university course with modules and exams at the end of each module.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

AstraZeneca is an extremely supportive employer. It offers a personal supervisor, mentor and line manager who all are very willing and able to give advice and guidance. Alongside this, AstraZeneca have an internal AZinspire group aimed at new employees of AstraZeneca to make them feel involved in a community and keep them linked in with young people on a similar journey.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The training provider was okay at providing support. As an apprentice you receive an allocated apprenticeship coordinator who has a performance with you every few months. There is also an option to have extra student support mentoring if you feel you are struggling. The university lecturers for each module are easily contactable and respond quickly.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification is extremely applicable to my day to day work. It allows learning of the theoretical side of the scientific knowledge, which can then directly be applied to the laboratory work. It frees up time for learning or the more practical and application side of the science which has worked out really well.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

AstraZeneca have an internal group called AZinspire, which is set up for new or young employees of AZ who are early in their scientific career. It creates a community where people can meet face to face or virtually. AstraZeneca also have regular networking days to meet staff members outside of your usual department.

AstraZeneca is an extremely good company to work for. AZ has five core values which are lived by every day. It offers excellent support to everyone starting their scientific career and makes you feel welcome and part of a community. The salary and benefits on top are an added bonus to the role.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to AstraZeneca?
The first piece of advice is to do some background research on AstraZeneca and it’s values, and see if they are in line with your own. Then the next step is to be yourself throughout all the interview processes and trust that you are the right person for the role. Also remember you have to decide whether the role is a fit for yourself, too!
