Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
My role is within the labs. I have a 7 hour working day in which I learn a range of skills such as using pieces of equipment like GCs and LCs. I am trained in how to use the equipment as well as the software along side it, in order to run samples.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I really enjoy my programme. I am able to apply my skills into a working environment and I gain a salary along side my studies. Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful and make you feel comfortable within the working environment. The work load is manageable and mostly has no set deadline which makes it easy to have a balance with work and home life.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt new skills like preparing specific samples and running them on specific pieces of equipment in order to gain results. I am then able to compare this to previous results to see whether my results are in line with site standard. I am also able to apply the theory I learn at university to the practicals at work

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
At the moment, my programme is extremely well structured. At the beginning of each week my mentor provides the plan for the week allowing us to fit in whatever meetings or other activities we have scheduled into our day. The work is given at a good pace, not too fast where we may get confused, and also not too slow where we may get bored of repeating the same thing.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive a lot of support from my employer. I have fortnightly meetings with my manager to see how I am getting on, and a mentor who is there for me everyday. I also receive a lot of support from other workers who are always happy to help when it is needed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Unfortunately the support from the training provider is not as good as I hoped, but it is understandable as I am on a distance learning course. However, the lecturers can be contacted through emails and will always respond. Even though I don’t receive much support from uni, my manager and mentor are always there to give support if and when I need it
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
My knowledge of particular tests and equipment are further enhanced through my training provider. I am able to use the theory learnt from uni to understand why we use specific chemicals or run specific tests on our samples. It makes it a bit easier to understand the logistics behind our work, rather than us running the tests without understanding why we run them.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
2/5
Unfortunately due to covid I haven’t seen a lot of activities take place on site. However, I have heard from other employees that events would often take place on site like charity events. I think it would be nice to get involved with some of these events once they start running again, as it is an opportunity to meet more people on site
