Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
I am an apprentice paralegal meaning I assist fee earners e.g., solicitors, with their cases. For example, I may assist by drafting legal documents on their behalf, chasing updates for them e.g., from client's or the Court, sitting in on meetings to make a note, etc.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
I am thoroughly enjoying my programme and the work I get involved in. However, I am only 4 months into the programme so I still have so much to learn and experience. This role makes me eager to learn more and put the hard work in to see results.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
Yes, I have learnt many new skills in my role. These include telephone communication skills, drafting legal documents, drafting letters and emails to experts, chasing updates from the Court, having direct contact with client's and many more.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
I think my programme is well organised. It has been difficult, however, due to the covid-19 pandemic meaning we are predominantly all working remotely. This means it has been slightly harder to deliver training sessions.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I have daily/weekly catch up's with my line manager. This is really useful to ask any questions or ask for support with a task we may be struggling with. I also have a good support network with the 'family hub'. I never hesitate to ask for help.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
I recieve support from my training provider and my coach in my review and coaching sessions. I feel at times we could be supported more by being updated on everything to do with the apprenticeship e.g., exams, as I never feel 100% confident/clear on my training plan.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
3/5
I believe when I move onto the family law module (my specialism), then this will allow me to fully perform better in my role as I can get to grips with the procedures for children, finance cases, for example. I wish I did this module at the start.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
4/5
Yes, I believe there are. Irwin Mitchell are very supportive of joining these activities. For example, I know they have their own netball team. This is something I haven't yet looked into.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Irwin Mitchell to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Because it is a very well known, reputable firm. My colleagues are so welcoming and supportive and always ensure to give constructive feedback to allow me to thrive in my role. I am made to feel part of a collective group rather than just an 'apprentice'.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Irwin Mitchell?
Research the firm before. Get to understand what their values are and what services they provide. Prepare for the assessments and interviews but just be yourself and that is what will stand out to the potential employers.
