Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I worked in a team of 5 interns where we followed SCRUM techniques. We had daily stands ups, created features stories, planned and retrospected our sprints (2 weeks). We also demoed our progress alongside the senior teams at the end of the sprints. We were encouraged to contribute our perspectives and work just as any other team. In addition, we working using technologies such as Spring Boot, Jenkins and Gatling.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Absolutely ! We were made very clear how important our project is from the start, and how it will help the team which was very exciting !

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, I have improved my knowledge of Java and my coding style. I have also learnt more about sprint planning and writing feature stories as well as the definition of done for a story. I also learned many new technologies and improved my teamwork, communication and presentation skills.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

We honestly received a lot of support throughout ! Both as a team and individually. Everyone was willing to help and there was almost always someone around to help us.
We also had many individual chats with senior engineers where we had the chance to discuss any concerns and get feedback on our work and progress. These really helped in our professional and personal growth.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

It felt like one large family. Over 10 weeks we got to see just how much Amex focuses and cares about its customers and employees. The environment was very welcoming and pleasant. Going to work everyday never felt less stressful !
