Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
Quality assurance of governance processes displayed within the programme management office. I work with projects and stakeholders to set methodologies that work for the masses and roll out the implementation of this work. I conduct regular reviews of all processes and procedures, amending when appropriate to do so to keep them universally accessible.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
My programme is fast paced and very eye opening. It can be incredibly challenging at times but the rewards out weigh any difficulties or stressful situations. I have enjoyed learning to adapt my learning to a work based setting and believe that the programme will benefit the masses when it reaches conclusion.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
4/5
I had a basic knowledge of project management when I entered this role but working in a programme management office, alongside undertaking an apprenticeship has broadened my knowledge significantly. I am engaging specifically with project managers to learn about the aspects of their jobs which I lack knowledge of due to working in a PMO.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
My programme has faced a turbulent ride due to a high turn over of joiners and leavers at all levels of the programme. This year clarity over roles has been provided and clear direction given so I believe when all of these changes are implemented it will be extremely well organised.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
4/5
I receive unlimited support from my employer when undertaking my apprenticeship. My line manager and members of my team regularly engage with me to see how I am progressing and if they can offer any additional support. If I have any troubles my line manager will assist me as a priority.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
4/5
I receive a lot of support from my training provider. Things have been unclear at times but they have gone out of their way to rectify these issues and ensure I understand the requirement. I receive answers to emails promptly and if the answer is unknown, they will find it quickly.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
My qualification helps me perform better in my role as working in a programme management office gives me a broad knowledge of all aspects of a project. However the apprenticeship allows me to understand points from the perspective of the project manager so when I engage with them I can see their reasoning behind things.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
3/5
At present there are limited extra-curricular activities that can be taken place in a face to face setting due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, I have access to a number of professional networking events that take place virtually and these opportunities have expanded since becoming an APM student body member.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Defence Equipment & Support to a friend?
Yes
Why?
The apprenticeship covers a wide range of knowledge required to be successful in the world of transformation and projects. It gives a basic knowledge of all that is required and gives you take away points to research independently and expand your knowledge. The support towards the exam and end point assessment is very beneficial.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Defence Equipment & Support?
There is a lot of independent work that needs to be completed so set aside at least one day per week to keep on top of work. Communicate regularly with your line manager and TDO and voice any concerns early and they will be rectified quickly. It will be a very useful qualification to obtain.
