Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I have been brought into Openreach as a cabler in the Chief Engineers department, this involves safely accessing the underground telephone network in order to prepare and install brand new fibre-optic cabling. My main responsibilities are to identify the correct work points, safeguard each work point and safely access in order to install fibre cable and back rope.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

Having previously worked in an office environment this has been a huge change, I have enjoyed all training both in the training centre and out in the field. The instructors in Bradford were excellent and management on patch friendly, approachable and extremely helpful. At no point have I felt that this new role isn't for me. I wake up looking forward to work every day!
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt how to gas test, safely access the underground telephone network and various techniques of installing new cables through underground ducts. I have also learnt to overcome obstacles in the form of blockages using various tools. Most importantly I have developed my lifting techniques in order to avoid injury and future back problems.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

So far the programme has been clearly organised and planned out. From day 1 the journey ahead was set out including which classes we had and when, once out on patch the experience gained at the training centre proved highly valuable, showing the high quality of teaching received. Having recently sat workshop 2 of the apprenticeship I feel confident in passing the year successfully.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

The support I have received so far has been excellent, the managers on patch are understanding and approachable. They have always been quick to offer helpful advice on how to work more efficiently and easily as well as being there to help when I've needed help with various IT systems. Openreach over all has so many support networks to turn to in times of need, I feel well looked after!
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

So far the training providers have set out the journey ahead clearly, they have made it clear that I can arrange an appointment to discuss training whenever we like. They are genuinely interested in seeing me not only pass but gain a distinction and will make sure that I take my final test when it is clear that I am ready for it.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification will give me a better understanding of how the wider network works as well as set a foundation for further learning for my career in telecoms engineering. Having come from a very different work background the training provided is highly valuable and will give me the skills and confidence needed to succeed.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

I am aware that there are groups that can be joined online using the company workplace however I am unsure what extra-curricular activities are on offer, therefore I cannot comment on what is available and the quality of such activities. This could potentially be an improvement during the induction week.

Why?
The benefits of a career with Openreach are amazing, I have been provided with a van, fuel card, company phone, laptop and all the tools I need for my job. I have felt well looked after from day 1 of my time at Openreach and so far have enjoyed nearly all my days at work. I am learning new skills, meeting excellent people and doing fulfilling work.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
The interview process can be long and drawn out, but stay enthusiastic, show interest in the work that Openreach is doing and most of all be sure that you are up for the challenges ahead. There is a lot to learn if you are not from this background but the training is amazing and support top class. Be prepared to prioritise safety above all else also.
