Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

I am a mechanical engineering apprentice, my main tasks involve CNC machining on both lathes and milling machines. I work on prototype parts that will be tested, modifications to existing parts are also undertaken. I work with a team of machinists to get the job through each process in the workshop.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I enjoy working with everyone in the business, each individual will always be willing to help you where required. The company culture is friendly and professional so that each job can be done to a great standard. I enjoy working at Cummins each day and it thoughrally meets my expectations of what a great place to work would be.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt various new skills throughout my apprenticeship. The main practical skills gained are programming/setting lathes/milling machines. I have also learnt manual lathe skills on top of the CNC work. I have gained professional skills too such as working with a big group of people to run events and attending training courses to gain extra knowledge.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

The whole process has been very well organised from start to finish in most cases. The induction was well planned and we got to have a full structured first day on site with plenty of introductions and training etc. The training has remained well planned throughout and you get reminders when courses are on for you to attend. The support system is great from both managers and HR.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a great amount of support from everyone in the business. This goes right from other colleagues to managers and the HR team. My college mentor/assessor is very helpful whenever I have questions about my portfolio too. The general attitude towards supporting apprentices is positive, everyone is friendly and willing to help.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

I receive lots of support from my training provider in terms of the work set. The tutors have been helpful and will always walk you through something if you don't understand it first time. Extra sessions after the normal college day are also available if you need to catch up or ask other questions about work set.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The workshop core skills learnt at college have really helped when entering the business workshop environment. I have put a lot of the knowledge learnt at college into practice at work. The theory side of college has also helped me at work, the materials science part especially. I definitely feel that I know more about my job role after completing the mechanical engineering level 2/3 course.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

We do lots of events in the local community, these include charity events or helping local schools. We promote apprenticeships at local events and in schools, this is done in the way of presentations etc. I have personally visited my previous school to conduct an assembly on apprenticeships and been on a question/answer panel for that. Sporting/social events are sometimes organised between my work colleagues, these are great to get involved with.

Why?
I would recommend Cummins to a friend as overall it is a great company to work for. You get up to date training when required, my work colleagues/mangers are friendly and they will always help you when needed. You have reviews so that your opinions can be heard too which is good as you can air out problems and talk professionally.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cummins?
I would strongly recommend research on the company itself as this shows willing and enthusiasm to learn about the company. In interviews you should be professional and try to learn some specific parts about the role that you are applying for. You should always ask questions as that shows interest too.
