Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Meeting and greeting the team in the mornings, pop to the office to see what jobs we have been given and need to be carried out. Head to where the work needs to be done. Take a walk of the site looking at our job pack to see what needs to be done. The job can vary however the equipment we use is similar each day so once we have a starting point we will get our guards out and open doorway paths to rod/rope and or insert cables. Usually working in teams of two to a box.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

So far, so good. It is such a different line of work for me but I have always enjoyed being on the go and putting in hard work so it definitely ticks that box for me. I’ve enjoyed learning something new and hopefully will make a forever career out of it.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, this job is completely different from my previous role as a cafe/hospitality manager. It’s a nice change and I am learning new things every day about the telecommunications network, how it works and what is in place to make it work. I don’t think there has been a day so far that I haven’t learnt something new!
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

It is fairly organised. Some days it can feel that it is disorganised however I can see that this is down to either an area being completed or waiting on gaining new areas. It’s nice though as it means that some weeks you will go off on different jobs.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Loads. They have drilled it in to us that if we need anything or help with anything that we can go to them. The company itself has a union and also an employee assistance program in which they can also support you with anything (legal, personal, financial). And my managers themselves have been amazing.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

We only met our apprenticeship lady this week however I’m really impressed at how helpful and patient she has been with us all. She has assured us that we can contact her out of sessions too if we need any guidance and she has been really helpful with how to navigate through the apprentice point website.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I think it helps as it give you a bit more drive. I can imagine that with such a big company that if they didn’t have an apprentice scheme in place that some individuals that maybe don’t work as hard would slip through the gaps and be a financial burden on the company. Completing an apprenticeship will filter that out by forcing individuals to learn and understand or potentially lose your job
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

As of yet, no. I think some people have made a connection well enough to meet up out of work for drinks etc. Once I know people a bit better I may join them! Sometimes they have work in other areas so a team will travel together which sounds nice as they get to all stay in the same place and socialise out of hours.

Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I didn’t imagine myself leaving hospitality for a long time but COVID forced my hand. I wouldn’t change a thing, I’ve pushed myself out of my comfort zone and started something completely new and so far I love it. I have already mentioned to a few friends who are considering career changes that it could be for them.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
Probably to just go for it. Enjoy the training and induction weeks. Make sure you network with people and remember everyone starts somewhere so don’t be scared to get stuck in! (And for females don’t worry about it being a male heavy industry everyone has been so lovely)
