Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role in AON as a retirement actuary consisted of calculating pension values and trivial commutation for clients. I got to sit into team meetings and see the bigger picture of where my work led. I also got to edit reports and presentations that would be presented to clients. I've got to learn a lot about the industry specifically retirement and pensions and got to work with some very big brand-name clients. A lot of the work is mathematical but can be easily learnt
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
As you are dealing with high-profile clients and quoting extremely high value pension figures you cannot be given the responsibility to send Pension figure quotes straight off to the clients. Therefore after you have finished the work it is checked by two other senior people before being passed on to the clients admin team. So although your work has to be checked, you are given a lot of responsibility in terms of being able to calculate the entire pension figure yourself.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I have improved many skills on both an academic and social level. Even the internship was online for the majority of the time I was able to go into the London office enabling me to better my social skills and improve my network in the industry gaining some contacts. Academically I gained a lot of mathematical skills but also improved my working skills. I got to start from the basics of CETV calculations and by the end of the nine weeks I am confident to be able to do them for many client teams.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
You have a whole week of training which is extremely helpful. You are assigned a Buddy who is assigned to you for the whole nine weeks and is really friendly and able to guide you step-by-step through everything in the internship. They tell you who you can contact and also start by giving you the work in the first couple of weeks. You have a manager who you have weekly meetings with which is also extremely helpful. And you gradually get to grow your cycle as many people reach out to you to give you work.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
I want to super friendly and willing to help you. Nothing really is a silly question. People go out of their way to try and help you regardless of if you set the task or not. You never feel like it's difficult to ask a question. You really get to grow your social circle and go out with people after work and learn more about the company as a whole. Everyone is really welcoming

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I enjoyed the internship as I got to learn so much and also meet so many people.
The industry is really large and it really showed me how there's so many opportunities to be taken advantage of. The work changed a lot throughout the nine weeks and I still did not get to learn everything there is. Definitely met my expectations and the company culture is so great and super friendly and welcoming.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Aon to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Aon
Just be yourself in the interview they really want to see who you genuinely are as a person. Learn more about the industry and what roll AON plays in the industry. The assessment centre has a presentation section performed in front of a few other applying colleagues and employees, followed by a final interview by one or two people.
Day one is really simple they send lots of emails to guide you through what it would be like so you don't have to worry. The first week tends to be an introduction.
