As an apprentice at Barclays for me no day has been the same. I am in my second rotation of three, over three years gaining experience in Compliance, Accounting practices and other Business Management techniques within my team. Most of my work is internal.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

When applying I expected to join and be working in Canary Wharf everyday. Now scenarios change but the support from my team and the people at Barclays as a whole have been fantastic and really motivate you to do well with your apprenticeship and work projects.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have learnt a variety of new skills. Firstly my knowledge on the industry, how banks work and the future of banking has dramatically increased through qualifications and colleagues. Then I have also constantly been gaining soft skills in report creating, accounting work and excel skills funded by Barclays themselves.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

Due to uncertainty over face to face learning the experience definitely has been hindered. Although the adaptation has been difficult, I still had enough support to pass all assignments and understand my priorities of work.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

I have been greatly surprised at the overwhelming support I have received over the last 15 months from my employer. From colleagues within my own team, to my line manager to the Executives with communications offering support, I cannot fault the amount of support I have received.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

The attitude the training provider has when in communication is great they always seem open and happy to help at any point. I would say there may not be enough mandatory communication, especially with the circumstances of the last year, as there should be.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification has given me a great understanding of the bigger picture and why i perform the tasks I do ever day. From this it can help motivate you as your understanding grows. On top of this you understand why other teams do what they do also.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

Due to the pandemic, socialising has been more difficult. When i was in the office I had lots of extra-curricular activities explained to me and unfortunately i have not had the opportunity to take advantage. I am aware some of these activities have been able to continue online.

Why?
The culture at Barclays is a really positive one and they have really shown to be at the forefront of positive change within the industry. Every day experience of working for such a firm sets you in great stead for any future experiences.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Barclays?
I would say enjoy it and be yourself. Don't expect to be the smartest person in the room, try and be personable as well and use your own experiences to your advantage. For interviews try to prepare real life scenarios linking to Barclays culture and values.
